OUR WORK

What happens when you bring together Wine Industry leaders and provide them with exceptional learning and development opportunities? Innovative solutions and delectable wine, that’s for sure.

Wine Australia is funded by grapegrowers and winemakers through levies and user-pays charges, and by the Australian Government, which provides matching funding for research, development and adoption (RD&A) investments.

Working closely with representative organisations, wine sector bodies and industry partners, Wine Australia invests in programs and activities to support the long-term success of the Australian grape and wine community. Next time you pour your favourite local tipple, proud of where Australian wines sit on the international arena, you can thank this glorious group for their commitment to the craft.

The Challenge

Is there a more desirable client than Wine Australia to work with? Hard to beat for sure… Wine Australia is funded by grapegrowers and winemakers through levies and user-pays charges, and by the Australian Government, which provides matching funding for research, development and adoption (RD&A) investments.

The clear challenge for this organisation is delivering value to a sector that is broad and diverse – from geographical differences, to the sheer variety of roles, to the juggle of domestic and international positioning of Australian wines. The last decade has provided significant impacts on this sector, from global exporting impacts, supply-chain disruptions, and the devastation of natural disasters and climate shifts.

In order to continue to innovate and provide a strong global presence, Wine Australia and Australian Grape and Wine are committed to providing a leading-edge, innovative, and contemporary leadership program.

Since 2017, Pragmatic Thinking has partnered with Wine Australia to craft and continue to evolve an exceptional learning experience for their Future Leaders program – aimed to build capability in the sector to navigate the challenges ahead.
The platform has been created to craft a unique and long-term solution.

The Solution

Pragmatic Thinking worked closely with Wine Australia to create, curate and deliver an exceptional experience for participants in the Future Leaders program. Future Leaders has been reimagined both from a design and experience perspective. Ensuring that we worked collaboratively with industry leaders to craft a solution that would uplift capability now, and build strength in the sector for the future.

Future Leaders program is an experiential-based six-month leadership development program designed to support individuals who are ready to step up and take their businesses (and the Australian wine sector) to the next level.
Anyone in the Australian wine industry can apply and the application process is competitive and hotly-contested with over 120 applications each program; and a select 15 individuals from across Australia are chosen.
Upon completion participants join an alumni of high calibre industry leaders.
The program is focused on both personal development, and professional development with the learning framework covering four key themes:
  • The Identity of Leadership
  • The Science of Leadership
  • The Art of Leadership
  • The Future of Leadership
Program participants are exposed to a variety of thought leaders both industry and external speakers. They are challenged personally, and provided tools to elevate their leadership professionally.
The defining artefact produced as part of this program was a hard – cover book titled ‘Thought Leadership’, where each participant was required to develop their own thought leadership contribution for the Wine Industry. Each participant completes the program as a published author.

The Outcome

Future Leaders is the gold standard of leadership development across the sector with an active, connected and impactful alumni cohort. It has a strong reputation and participants are invited to speak, influence and guide on behalf of the sector as a result of having been a part of this program.

The strength of this reputation and ongoing iteration of the program means that each time the program is advertised for applications it is overwhelmed with responses.
According to the program results, the greatest changes that have occurred for participants of the program are in the following areas:
  • Strengthened industry and business networking
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Leading changes around key sector challenges
  • Experiencing greater health and well-being benefits
  • Utilisation of core leadership tools and resources
  • Having the capacity and confidence to influence change across the sector
The 2023 Thought Leadership book publication has been identified as a finalised in the Wine Communication Awards for ‘Best New Wine Book’.
This program gives participants a lot of practical tools and strategies that they can put in their back pocket and really take things to the next level. Leadership can mean so many things to so many people and the way we value the outcomes of a leadership program like this is really important.
